GRC isn’t just dedicated to providing MRI safety services,
we’re dedicated to teaching them, too!
We offer training for MR Medical Director (MRMD) and MR Safety Officer (MRSO) in accord with international consensus standards.
MR Medical Director (MRMD)
The MR Medical Director (MRMD) or MR Research Director (MRRD) is the physician responsible for the safe execution of MR exams under his/her purview. This makes the MRMD in charge of defining the policies, procedures, and safe practices from everything from implant and device clearances, to contrast safety, to patient screening, to access controls, to staff safety competency, to the use of MR Conditional equipment.
The MRMD is the individual ultimately responsible for the safety of practices in the MRI suite, including supervisory responsibility over the technologist and support staff within the MRI areas. It is because of this breadth of responsibility, including times when the MRI is under the direct control of others, that it is vital that the MRMD is appropriately trained on their duties and responsibilities.
MR Safety Officer (MRSO)
The MR Safety Officer (MRSO) is – for all intents and purposes – the eyes, ears, and hands of the MRMD within the MRI suite. While the MRMD is responsible for developing safety policies and procedures, the MRSO is the one to see that documented policies are indeed what gets practiced in the day-to-day operation of the MRI suite.
Particularly if empowered by the MRMD to make decisions on his/her behalf, the MRSO must have a similar grasp of the potential hazards of all of the risk elements within the MRI suite. Additionally, the MRSO will need to have an intimate understanding of the operating parameters of the MR scanners such that she/he can help quantify the risks, particularly of implant or device patients.
Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!
How long are the MRMD / MRSO training sessions?
The length can be tailored to a site’s needs, but GRC will not identify courses less than 20 hours in total length as comprehensive MRMD or MRSO training. We recommend four days, particularly if students plan to sit for one of the MRSC™ certifying exams.
Are MRMD and MRSO trainees taught separately?
The majority of the content is common to both MRMD and MRSO trainees, so there is little penalty to either when they are taught together. There is nothing, however, that would prevent GRC from teaching a session specific to MRMDs or MRSOs.
What are the costs?
The costs will depend on the requested course duration, and location. For groups of less than a ten, training may be less costly attending a seminar elsewhere. As you approach or exceed ten trainees, on-site training becomes increasingly cost-effective.
Does GRC provide certification testing?
MR Safety Certification™ for MRMD and MRSO is presently only available through the American Board of MR Safety. Requests for exam administration may be made with ABMRS and their exam administrator, but the decision to administer exams lies solely with them. GRC can work with you to request exam administration, if you so desire.
Are these training sessions ‘test prep’ sessions?
In a word, no. GRC’s MRMD and MRSO training is job performance training, and is not test-taking training. The training content does directly parallel the content of the ABMRS’ exam syllabus, but the training is geared towards the practical application of the knowledge, and not ‘picking the correct multiple-choice answer.’
